Permanent residence visa – New laws – Foreign students
In order to obtain permanent residence visa in Denmark, a list of requirements need to be fulfilled.
New law
The new laws/rules in order to obtain permanent residence visa where passed 26. January 2016 but do apply from 10 December 2016. The new laws apply to a lot of different people in the society but one of the groups which nobody has spoken about in the media is foreign students who is also affected by these new laws.
Foreign students in Denmark
The thousands of foreign students in Denmark who have paid for their education themselves is affected very much by the new law on immigration.
One of the conditions to obtain permanent residence visa in Denmark, is that one have been in ordinary occupation in at least 3 out of the last 5 years. That means, if one has been working full time the last 3 years, one can apply permanent residence visa.
This condition of occupation the last 3 years, used to be fulfilled as long as one had been studying the last 3 years in Denmark in a college etc.
Foreign students could apply for permanent residence in Denmark if they had studied at least 3 years here in Denmark, along with other conditions.
What do the new law mean to you?
The new rules which have been passed Jan 2016, means that foreign students who were looking forward to getting a permanent residence visa after 3 years of studying here in the country, can not apply for the visa.
Where one could use their education instead of 3 years working, this is not possible anymore.
This is a shock for many foreign students, who have lived and studied in Denmark the last 3-5 years with a expectation that they could stay in Denmark, or at least have the opportunity to apply for the permanent residence.
